Tuesday 8 august 2000
Our first night in Greece (Friday 5 august), we still can't fully comprehend that our 6 month trip has started. The ancient city
of Kassope where put up our camp does add some mystical touch to the start of our journey. Between the ruins of the temple of Aphrodite we discuss the coming days while eating greek salad with real tomato's and
feta. Sunset comes early here around 8:30 (UTC+1) which is 9:30 (UTC+2)local time. The night is clear showing a magnificent sky full of stars.
Saturday we spend the morning reading in the shade. Again we're
treated on a full show from a local dog getting completely wild about a piece of bread. We both felt that a dog would be nice company on such a trip, but again space in our camper is limited. But it's still really
tempting :-) The rest of the day we drove through the mountains on our way to Karpenisi. We encountered a few stretches of rough off-road passages because at some point we completely lost track of our position on
the map. There are many roads in this region between Gliki and Karpenisi not mapped at all. GPS aided us in choosing a direction at the many junctions we encountered in the woods. Our 4WD low gear helped us a big
deal in slowly descending some real steep and bumpy slopes. Did we come prepared or what ? That evening we camped at the Ski-center of Carpenisi at 1880 meters overlooking a huge valley. 17 degrees and a chilly
wind kept us in our camper, although we managed to shower ourselves outside with luke warm water from a black waterbag on the roof.
Sunday we drove to Mexiates in 2 hours, where we planned to see Peter en
Maria who we met 3 years ago while re-filling our water supply at a water-tap near a church. Noon is siesta time, and not surprisingly their house looked deserted. So again we drove up to that same water tap and
headed up into the mountains for a cool breeze.

That evening we tried again and drove straight to their house, and yes they where at home surprising Peter, Maria and Demi with our unannounced visit. It was
great to see them after three years and we where greeted warmly over Greek coffee, beer and pizza in the evening. The following days we enjoyed their warm hospitality eating Mousaka, Greek salad, ice-cream, beer and
home-brew grape liquor (Tsipouro). We probably visit Peter, Maria and Demi again in the winter when returning from our Middle-East tour. The next couple of days we'll be on the road heading for Turkey, a new
country for the both of us.
