Carnet de passage

Not required, but advisable to have one.
Cost at the border without Carnet:
+/- US$200 for the Iran carnet version
+/- US$400 road tax in case of transit
These are averages and depend on the model and fuel type. This is charged at every border crossing into Iran.
Note: India & Pakistan require a carnet.

Car insurance

Can be bought at the border, however the office is not always open. The European green card is (sometimes) valid, world insurance also provides coverage.
Please note that European green cards mention Iran as a covered area. Asking directly at the insurance company sometimes gets you the opposite answer...

Comments

Mr Hossein at the Maku border (he will spot you first) can help to get the Iranian stamps for your carnet and get your car through customs. First negotiate payment for this service.
Passengers must cross the border separately from the driver when coming from Turkey.
Stamps at Carnet from neighbouring countries at Isreali borders might cause trouble.
